The National Medical Scribe Association is a 501(c)6, non-profit organization. The origins of the National Medical Scribe Association began with the advent of the medical scribe industry in the 1990s. The privatization of the medical scribe industry in the last 2 decades has resulted in a plethora of unique, variable, and ill-defined training standards for medical scribes. As the medical scribe industry expands, it becomes more essential that we develop standards for the certification of medical scribes. Because of the range of private interests from Scribe America, Physsassist, Medical Scribe Systems, and all companies within the field be represented in the certification process. We believe that the rising tide raises all ships and we intend to help the industry as a whole, from the individual scribe to the large medical scribe corporation.

Dr. Laura Bultman is the founder and president of the National Medical Scribe Association. Formerly an emergency medicine physician, Dr. Bultman has since moved on to high-level consulting in the EMR implementation and clinical documentation improvement realms. Having worked with a large number of medical scribes in many different emergency departments, Dr. Bultman felt that an oversight organization that works across the industry in an inclusive manner was needed. Through Dr. Bultman's vision and leadership, the NMSA strives to improve overall quality of medical scribe training throughout the nation.

Our Mission:
The National Medical Scribe Association's mission is to standardize and improve medical scribe training throughout the United States. The National Medical Scribe Association will do this through the application and refinement of training standards that lead to certification of medical scribes working in many different medical settings.  The National Medical Scribe Association will also work with hospitals, medical scribe companies, physician groups, and practicing physicians to provide certification and optimization of medical scribe training and best clinical practices for medical scribes.  The National Medical Scribe Association will take input for anyone/everyone in the industry as it continues to work to improve the medical scribe training and certification process.
Our Goals:
The NMSA recognizes the following educational and scientific goals and purposes:
  • To develop national medical scribe certification criteria as well as training systems that meet this criteria.
  • To continuously improve the National Medical Scribe Association training standards and benchmarks required for medical scribe certification based on the latest scientific research and best practices for medical scribes.
  • To investigate and optimize pre-clinical and clinical training processes for medical scribes.
  • To advocate for scribe certification standards so as to improve efficacy and efficiency of medical scribes in clinical practice.
  • To act as a central contact point for medical scribes and related organizations who are looking to optimize medical scribe training and practice.
  • To advocate for medical scribes' quality of life, professional development and fair wage standards.
